5 Signs Your MacBook Battery Needs Replacing

MacBook batteries wear out with use. Most last several years, but once they start to fail it’s worth replacing them early, before a swollen battery damages the trackpad or case.
1. “Service Recommended”
Hold Option and click the battery icon in the menu bar. If it says Service Recommended, the battery has degraded.
2. Short battery life
If a full charge only lasts an hour or two, the cells are worn out.
3. Sudden shutdowns
Shutting down at 20โ40% is a classic sign of a failing battery.
4. Trackpad hard to click or case lifting
This usually means the battery is swelling. Stop using the Mac and bring it in. Swollen batteries should be replaced promptly.
5. Only works on the charger
If your Mac dies the moment you unplug it, the battery needs replacing.
